Country artist Smith performing at Brighton's 2013 Whoopee Days
Come and enjoy the sounds of Nashville at the 2013 Brighton’s Whoopee Days. Terry Smith, a traditional country singer and songwriter, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in Brighton’s Central Park.
Smith has written songs for a wide range of audiences and has a big following.
“I have had phone calls from people in Des Moines and Urbandale who saw he was performing in Brighton and want to come,” said Rosemary Pacha, a Brighton Chamber member who was instrumental in booking Smith. “Several of our local residents who winter in Texas have heard him and are excited for him to appear at Whoopee Days.”
Smith was voted by the Traditional Music Association as its Songwriter of the Year in both 1995 and 1996. He penned“Far-Side Banks of Jordan,” which was performed by June Carter Cash in Robert Duvall’s movie, “The Apostle.” The song has been recorded more than 170 times, including renditions by the Statler Brothers.
The singer songwriter also wrote one of the last singles for artist Roy Acuff – “I Can’t Find a Train,” and the Oak Ridge Boys recorded his rousing gospel number, “Lord, I’ve Been Ready for Years.” Country diva Kitty Wells cut Smith’s songs “It Doesn’t Say,” which lyrics narrates all that cannot be fitted into a tombstone’s inscription. “Ten Seconds in the Saddle” is in the Billboard chart book, which was recorded twice by the late rodeo champ and cowboy crooner Chris LeDoux. Dozens of other Smith songs cut, turning up on records by acts as diverse as the Statler Brothers; Kris Kristofferson; Patty Loveless; bluegrass premier gospel group, the Lewis Family; Lonnie Lynne LaCour; Bluegrass Brigade; the Singing Echoes; and Smoky Dawson — Australia’s equivalent to Roy Rogers.
